Capitals deal Jaroslav Halak to Islanders for draft pick

Have hockey bag, will travel.

That should be Jaroslav Halak mantra.

The veteran goaltender Thursday joined his fourth team in 10 weeks after the Washington Capitals dealt him to the New York Islanders for a fourth round draft pick.

Halak is a pending unrestricted free agent this summer, so the assumption is that the Isles made the deal because they feel confident they can sign him.

Then again, this is the shipwreck known as the Islanders we talking about here so you never know.

After going a stellar 24 9 4 for the Blues this season, Halak was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres as part of the trade that brought Ryan Miller to Buffalo. In the end, Miller the Blues so called couldn get St. Louis out of the first round of the playoffs.

Halak did not appear in a game for the Sabres and was ultimately dealt at the trade deadline along with a third round draft pick to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Mic nike id hal Neuvirth and Rostislav Klesla. He went 5 4 3 with a fine 2.31 goals against average and .930 save percentage for nike id the Caps, but it wasn enough to get the underachieving team into the playoffs.

Halak, still just 28, has an impressive career record of 144 85 29 with a 2.38 goals against average and .918 save percentage.

Do you think Jaroslav Halak can be the No. 1 goalie with the Islanders?

Capitalism is

Pope Francis on Tuesday called capitalism new tyranny and very explicitly called on global leaders to act on poverty and growing inequality.

Francis remarks are part of an 84 page document known as an apostolic exhortation, which makes official the platform for his papacy.

The document is incredibly direct in its call for specific, policy level action to fight institutional inequality rather than speaking broadly and loftily about poverty as some kind of abstraction or something to be addressed exclusively by charitable giving at the community level, as some of his predecessors have been content to do.

An excerpt (emphasis added):

How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly hom nike id eless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses two points? This is a case of exclusion. Can we continue to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This is a ca nike id se of inequality. Today everything comes under the laws of competition and the survival of the fittest, where the powerful feed upon the powerless. As a consequence, masses of people find themselves excluded and marginalized: w nike id ithout work, without possibilities, without any means of escape.

Human beings are themselves considered consumer goods to be used and then discarded. We have created a “disposable” culture which is now spreading. It is no longer simply about exploitation and oppression, but something new. Exclusion ultimately has to do with what it means to be a part of the society in which we live; those excluded are no longer society’s underside or its fringes or its disenfranchised they are no longer even a part of it. The excluded are not the “exploited” but the outcast, the “leftovers”.

In this context, some people continue to defend trickle down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and nave trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting. To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that selfish id nike id eal, a globalization of indifference has developed. Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s responsibility and not our own. The culture of prosperity deadens us; we are thrilled if the market offers us something new to purchase; and in the meantime all those lives stunted for lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us.

Capital shoppers find new ways to carry on

Car sharing is thriving here, bike lanes are proliferating and a new streetcar line is under construction. Now, Oregonians may want to learn from the district, whose recently imposed 5 cent tax on grocery bags has been a great success.

As the recent legislative controversies in Oregon and elsewhere have shown, the plastic bag industry fights bag restrictions tenaciously and effectively. But whether by design or by accident, the district’s approach has managed to nike id overcome resistance from the plastic bag industry and others, while doing much to control bag waste.

To start with, the district preserved consumer choice by imposing a bag fee, rather than a ban. Also, the 5 cent per bag levy is so low that it’s hard for opponents to characterize it as an economic hardship or an oppressive imposition of the nanny state. During the first weeks after the tax took effect, many large retailers provided free reusable bags to customers, as did the district government.

The district applies the tax equally to paper and plastic bags. With this policy, proponents sidestepped distracting arguments over the relative environmental merits of paper versus plastic and avoided the spike in paper bag use that results when governments target plastic only.

Out of every nickel they collect, district retailers are allowed to keep 1 cent (2 cents if they also give customers a discount for bringing their own bags). This compensates merchants fairly for their part in implementing the tax without giving them a large, unnecessary windfall.

Another smart move the district made was to allocate tax proceeds to a dedicated fund. The money will be used mainly t nike id o clean up the Anacostia, a polluted local river that contains many discarded bags. But the modest tax was so successful in changing shoppers’ behavior that the district had collected just $1.9 million in the program’s first 10 months. While measures of bag use are not precise, estimates indicate an astounding reduction of as much as 80 percent. From my own anecdotal observations in the checkout line, these numbers are plausible. nike id

Last month, a large suburban Maryland county bordering Washington was inspired to enact a bag tax modeled after the district’s. Other local jurisdictions nike id are considering similar actions, as is the state of Maryland.

Meanwhile, if district residents could learn more from Oregonians about microbrewing and artisanal baking, we in the nation’s capital would much improve the contents of the reusable bags we now carry home.
